DHEA Test (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
Uncover the adrenal hormone behind your fatigue and low mood.
The DHEA test measures the level of dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands, with smaller amounts made in the gonads. DHEA serves as a precursor to both testosterone and oestrogen, making it central to hormonal balance, energy regulation, immune function, and overall wellbeing. This test is typically requested when patients present with unexplained fatigue, low libido, mood disturbances, or symptoms suggestive of adrenal dysfunction. It is also used to investigate suspected adrenal insufficiency, adrenal hyperplasia, or to monitor hormone levels in patients undergoing adrenal-related treatment. Because DHEA levels naturally decline with age, the test can also provide useful insight into age-related hormonal changes.
The analysis is performed using a validated immunoassay technique, which provides accurate and reliable measurement of DHEA in the bloodstream. A simple blood sample is all that is required, collected by a trained phlebotomist.

Why it matters
DHEA is often described as the 'mother hormone' because of its role in producing sex steroids and supporting numerous physiological processes. Abnormal levels can point to adrenal disorders, chronic stress, or hormonal imbalances that affect energy, mood, and reproductive health. Identifying these imbalances early allows for targeted intervention, whether through lifestyle changes, supplementation, or medical treatment, helping patients regain vitality and protect their long-term health.
