Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) Test
Unlock the cellular spark behind your energy and heart health.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat-soluble vitamin-like compound found in almost every cell of the body. It plays a central role in the mitochondria, the tiny power plants that generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency your muscles, brain, and heart rely on every second. CoQ10 also acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage.
This test measures the concentration of CoQ10 in your blood to assess whether your levels are sufficient for optimal cellular energy production and antioxidant defence. It is particularly useful for people taking cholesterol-lowering statins, which can reduce the body's natural CoQ10 synthesis, as well as for those with unexplained fatigue, muscle weakness, or a family history of cardiovascular or mitochondrial conditions. It can also help monitor the effectiveness of CoQ10 supplementation.
What is measured
- Total Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): The combined circulating level of ubiquinone (oxidised) and ubiquinol (reduced) forms, reflecting your overall CoQ10 status.
Why it matters
CoQ10 is essential for energy production in the heart, muscles, and brain, and it helps shield cells from oxidative stress. Low levels have been linked to statin-related muscle symptoms, fatigue, and poorer cardiovascular outcomes. Measuring your CoQ10 gives you and your clinician a clear picture of whether your levels are adequate, so that diet, lifestyle, or supplementation can be tailored to support your energy, heart, and overall wellbeing.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
