Coeliac Gene Test (HLA-DQ2/DQ8)
Rule out coeliac disease with a simple genetic test.
The Coeliac Gene Test (HLA-DQ2/DQ8) is a genetic screening test used to assess the likelihood of coeliac disease. It is particularly useful for individuals with symptoms suggestive of coeliac disease, those with a family history of the condition, or when other tests have given unclear results. The test detects the presence or absence of the HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes, which are strongly associated with coeliac disease. The analytical method used is PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a highly sensitive technique for amplifying and detecting specific DNA sequences.
Genetic Markers
- HLA-DQ2: The presence of this gene variant is found in the majority of people with coeliac disease.
- HLA-DQ8: This gene variant is also associated with coeliac disease, though less common than HLA-DQ2.
Why it matters
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, leading to damage in the small intestine. The HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes are present in almost all individuals with coeliac disease. A negative result for both genes has a high negative predictive value, meaning it is very unlikely that a person has coeliac disease. This can help avoid unnecessary further testing or dietary restrictions. A positive result indicates an increased risk but does not confirm the disease; further testing (such as antibody tests or intestinal biopsy) may be needed. This test provides valuable information to guide clinical decision-making and can bring peace of mind to those concerned about coeliac disease.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
- Check whether your test needs fasting: We will tell you when you book, and the FAQ for your test will also say.
- Drink plenty of water beforehand: Being well hydrated makes blood collection easier.
- Wear clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.
- Bring a list of any medicines you take.
