Biomarkers: -- ABO -- Rh Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £0 The ABO type plus Rh blood group test determines an individual's blood type based on the presence or absence of certain antigens on the surface of red blood cells. The test determines both the ABO blood type (A, B, AB, or O) and the Rh factor (positive or negative). The ABO blood typing system classifies blood into four types: Type A: Red blood cells have A antigens on their surface and Plasma have Anti-B antibodies. Type B: Red blood cells have B antigens on their surface and Plasma have Anti-A antibodies. Type AB: Red blood cells have both A and B antigens on their surface and have have neither Anti-A nor Anti-B antibodies. Type O: Red blood cells have neither A nor B antigens on their surface, but Plasma have both Anti-A and Anti-B antibodies. The Rh blood typing system classifies blood as Rh-positive (presence of the Rhesus Factor D, RhD) or Rh-negative (absence of the Rhesus Factor D). The ABO type plus Rh blood group test is important for several reasons: Blood Transfusions: Determining the blood type is essential for matching compatible blood for transfusions. Blood with incompatible antigens can lead to serious transfusion reactions. Pregnancy and Rh Sensitization: Rh incompatibility between the mother and fetus can occur if the mother is Rh-negative and the fetus is Rh-positive. In such cases, the ABO type plus Rh blood group test helps identify Rh-negative women who may require Rh immune globulin (RhIg) injections during pregnancy to prevent Rh sensitization. Organ Transplants: Blood typing is crucial for matching compatible blood types between organ donors and recipients to minimize the risk of organ rejection. Forensic Identification: ABO typing can be used in forensic investigations to help identify potential blood donors at a crime scene.
