The test is primarily used to diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to anaemia and neurological problems. Symptoms Associated with Low Levels (Deficiency) : -- Anaemia: Characterized by fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations due to reduced red blood cell count or size. -- Neurological Symptoms: These can include numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, difficulty walking, muscle weakness, memory loss, disorientation, and in severe cases, dementia-like symptoms. -- Glossitis: A smooth, red tongue due to atrophy of the small bumps (papillae). -- Mouth Ulcers: Sores in the mouth or on the tongue. -- Vision Problems: Blurred or disturbed vision. -- Mood Changes: Depression, irritability, or changes in behaviour. Symptoms Associated with High Levels: High levels of vitamin B12 are generally not considered harmful as the body excretes excess through urine. However, elevated B12 levels might be indicative of: -- Liver Disease: Conditions like cirrhosis or hepatitis can increase B12 levels. -- Certain Myeloproliferative Disorders: Like chronic myeloid leukaemia or polycythaemia. -- Excessive Intake: Either through diet or supplements, though this rarely leads to symptoms unless there's an underlying condition. -- Kidney Failure: Can sometimes lead to elevated B12 levels due to reduced excretion.
