Transferrin (TRF)
Assess your iron transport capacity and detect potential iron deficiency
Service Description
Biomarker: TRF Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in the blood. The transferrin test measures the level of transferrin in the blood and is used to evaluate iron status and diagnose iron-deficiency anaemia. Symptoms associated with TRF deficiency may include: -- Fatigue and weakness: Low levels of transferrin can lead to reduced iron availability, which may result in tiredness and lack of energy. -- Anaemia: Insufficient iron transport can contribute to iron-deficiency anaemia, characterized by low red blood cell count and symptoms like pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, and weakness. -- Cognitive difficulties: In some cases, impaired iron transport may affect cognitive function, leading to difficulties with concentration, memory, and mental processing. -- Hair and nail abnormalities: Brittle or thinning hair, as well as brittle or spoon-shaped nails, can sometimes be associated with iron deficiency. -- Increased susceptibility to infections: Iron plays a crucial role in immune function, so transferrin deficiency or iron imbalance may result in a weakened immune system and increased vulnerability to infections.
