Service Description

The Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio assay test measures the balance of two types of T helper (Th) cells, known as Th1 and Th2, by analysing their respective cytokine profiles. Cytokines are small proteins that act as signalling molecules in the immune system, and different types of cytokines are produced by different types of immune cells. Th1 and Th2 cells are two different subsets of CD4+ T cells that play important roles in regulating the immune response. Th1 cells produce cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin-2 (IL-2), which promote cell-mediated immunity and help to fight off intracellular pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Th2 cells produce cytokines such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-5 (IL-5), and interleukin-13 (IL-13), which promote humoral immunity and help to fight off extracellular pathogens such as parasites and allergens. The balance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines is important for maintaining a healthy immune system, and alterations in this balance have been implicated in a variety of immune-related conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, allergies, and chronic infections. The Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio assay can provide information about the relative activity of these two cell types and may be used to help diagnose and monitor these conditions.
