Service Description

Biomarker: SAA Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 ABOUT ====== Serum Amyloid A blood testing is used to monitor inflammation in amyloidosis, a group of disorders caused by abnormal folding, aggregation and accumulation of certain proteins in the tissues. Normal healthy proteins are cleared away at about the same rate that they are produced, but proteins that have formed amyloid are broken down only very slowly. Amyloid A protein is normally present at low levels, but it can increase significantly in response to inflammation or infection. Elevated SAA levels can be seen in various conditions, including: 1. INFLAMMATORY DISEASES: Rheumatoid arthritis, inflamatory bowel disease (Crohn's), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). 2. INFECTIONS: Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can stimulate the production of SAA as part of the body's immune response. 3. TISSUE INJURY: Trauma, surgery, or tissue damage can lead to increased SAA levels as part of the healing process. 4. CANCER: Some cancers, particularly those associated with chronic inflammation, may cause elevated SAA levels. 5. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: SAA has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, so elevated levels may indicate increased cardiovascular risk.
