It is the causative agent of rubella, also known as German measles or three-day measles, a typically mild viral illness that primarily affects children and young adults. Rubella is notable for its potential to cause severe congenital defects if a pregnant woman is infected, especially during the first trimester, a condition called Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). Rubella spread through respiratory droplets (coughing or sneezing) or close contact with an infected person. The incubation period is typically 12–23 days, with an average of 14 days. Individuals are contagious about 7 days before and 7 days after the appearance of the rash. Symptoms of Rubella Infection -- Rash -- Low-grade fever -- Swollen lymph nodes especiallay behind the ears and at the base of the skull. -- Mild flu-like symptoms RUBELLA IgG TEST: The Rubella IgG test measures the level of IgG antibodies against the rubella virus in your blood. IgG antibodies are produced later in the infection or after vaccination and indicate past infection or successful vaccination. Interpretation of Rubella IgG Test ======================== -- POSITIVE: Generally indicates immunity due to either past infection or vaccination. It means you are likely protected against rubella. -- NEGATIVE: Suggests no immunity; you might be susceptible to infection or might have been infected recently but the body hasn’t yet produced IgG. RUBELLA IgM TEST: This test detects IgM antibodies which are usually the first type of antibodies produced by the body when it fights off a new infection. IgM antibodies are present in the early stages of infection. Interpretation of Rubella IgM Test ========================= -- POSITIVE: Typically indicates an acute or recent infection with rubella. This can be particularly concerning during pregnancy due to the risk of congenital rubella syndrome. -- NEGATIVE: Suggests no recent infection, though it does not rule out a very early stage infection or chronic infection where IgM might be low or undetectable.
