PTH helps control calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels, playing a critical role in maintaining bone health. PTH increases blood calcium levels by stimulating the release of calcium from bones, increasing absorption of calcium from the gut, and reducing calcium loss through the kidneys. PTH also decreases blood phosphate levels by promoting its excretion in the urine. Symptoms of high PTH levels (hyperparathyroidism)may include: -- Fatigue, muscle weakness -- Kidney stones -- Bone pain or osteoporosis -- Digestive issues like constipation or nausea Symptons of low PTH levels (hypoparathyroidism) may: -- Muscle cramps or spasms -- Tingling in the lips, fingers, or feet -- Dry skin, brittle nails -- Seizures or heart rhythm abnormalities in severe cases
