Service Description

Biomarker: PRL Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 PRL test measures the level of prolactin in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It is involved in lactation and reproduction. Prolactin levels can be affected by a variety of factors, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, and certain medications. The importance of PRL test includes: 1. Assessing Prolactin Imbalances: The test helps identify abnormalities in prolactin levels, such as hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin) or hypoprolactinemia (low levels of prolactin). Abnormal prolactin levels can be indicative of underlying conditions or disorders affecting the pituitary gland or other organs. 2. Diagnosing Prolactinomas: Prolactinomas are benign tumours of the pituitary gland that produce excess prolactin. The Prolactin test is a valuable tool in diagnosing and monitoring these tumours. 3. Evaluating Reproductive Health: Prolactin plays a role in regulating reproductive function. Elevated prolactin levels can disrupt ovulation and menstrual cycles in women, leading to irregular or absent periods, infertility, or reduced libido. In men, high prolactin levels can cause sexual dysfunction and reduced fertility. 4. Assessing Lactation Disorders: The Prolactin test is used to investigate lactation disorders, such as insufficient milk production or abnormal milk secretion (galactorrhoea). Symptoms or disorders associated with prolactin imbalances may include: -- Irregular or absent menstrual periods (amenorrhea) -- Infertility or difficulty conceiving -- Reduced libido or sexual dysfunction -- Galactorrhoea (inappropriate milk production outside of breastfeeding or childbirth) -- Headaches or visual disturbances (in the case of prolactinomas) -- Osteoporosis (long-term hyperprolactinemia)
