Biomarker: PGII Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 Pepsinogen II is a proenzyme, which means that it is an inactive form of an enzyme that is activated in the stomach. Pepsin is the active form of pepsinogen II, and it is responsible for breaking down proteins in food. The level of pepsinogen II in the blood can be used to assess the function of the stomach. A low level of pepsinogen II can indicate atrophic gastritis, which is a condition in which the stomach lining is damaged. Atrophic gastritis can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer. Symptoms of gastritis may include: -- Abdominal pain or discomfort -- Nausea or vomiting -- Bloating or feeling of fullness -- Loss of appetite -- Unexplained weight loss -- Indigestion or heartburn -- Fatigue or weakness -- Blood in vomit or stools (in severe cases)
