Pepsinogen I is a precursor to pepsin, an enzyme that helps to digest proteins in the stomach. A low level of pepsinogen I can indicate atrophic gastritis, which is a condition in which the stomach lining is damaged. Atrophic gastritis can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer. Symptoms of gastritis may include: -- Abdominal pain or discomfort -- Nausea or vomiting -- Bloating or feeling of fullness -- Loss of appetite -- Unexplained weight loss -- Indigestion or heartburn -- Fatigue or weakness -- Blood in vomit or stools (in severe cases)
