It may also increase in neuroendocrine tumours and certain nervous system tumours. In some cases NSE may also be mildly elevated in non-cancerous neurological or inflammatory conditions. SYMPTOMS THAT MAY REQUIRE FURTHER ASSESSMENT Persistent cough. Shortness of breath. Chest discomfort or pain. Unexplained weight loss. Fatigue or general weakness. Neurological symptoms such as headaches or changes in coordination. IMPORTANT NOTE NSE is not diagnostic for cancer on its own. Results should always be interpreted together with clinical symptoms, imaging, and other laboratory findings.
