NGAL (Neutrophil GA Lipocalin)
Diagnose acute kidney injury early
Service Description
Biomarker: NGAL Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), which is a protein that is produced by neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in response to inflammation. The NGAL test measures the level of NGAL in the blood, and is used as a sensitive marker of acute kidney injury (AKI, a sudden decline in kidney function that can be caused by a variety of factors, including sepsis, trauma, and surgery). NGAL levels can be used to diagnose AKI early, even before there are any changes in other markers of kidney function, such as creatinine. NGAL levels can also be used to assess the severity of AKI and to monitor the response to treatment. Some of the benefits of using NGAL as a marker of AKI: -- It is a sensitive marker of AKI. -- It can be used to diagnose AKI early. -- It can be used to assess the severity of AKI. -- It can be used to monitor the response to treatment. Limitations of using NGAL as a marker of AKI: -- It is not specific for AKI. -- It can be elevated in other conditions, such as sepsis and heart failure. -- It is not as well-studied in children and pregnant women.
