It is a key component of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body, and myoglobin, a protein that helps muscle cells store oxygen. Lows levels or deficiency could lead to -- iron-deficiency anaemia -- impared immune or cognitive functions -- restless leg syndrome -- impaired growth and development especially in infants, children and during pregnancy High levels of iron or iron overload could lead to -- liver damage -- heart disease by promoting oxidative stress, inflammation or plaque formation in arteries -- increase risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes -- joint pain and stiffness leading to arthritis-like symptons -- skin bronzing or grayish discolouration of the skin, particularly in areas exposed to the sun
