Hep B Surface Antigen (HBSAG)
Know your hepatitis B status
Service Description
Biomarker: HBSAG Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 HBsAg, or hepatitis B surface antigen, is a protein found on the surface of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is the first antigen to appear in the blood after infection with HBV, and it can be detected by a blood test called the HBsAg test. The HBsAg test is used to diagnose acute hepatitis B infection, which is the first stage of infection with HBV. The presence of HBsAg indicates that the person is infectious, except when it might be transiently positive within 30 days after a dose of hepatitis B vaccine (HepB). The body normally produces antibodies to HBsAg as part of the normal immune response to infection. The symptoms of acute hepatitis B infection can vary from person to person, but they may include: -- Fever -- Fatigue -- Nausea -- Vomiting -- Diarrhoea -- Joint pain -- Rash -- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
