Gastrin-17 (G-17) Test
A marker of stomach acid regulation and gastric antral health
Service Description
Biomarker: G17 Sample: BLOOD Results: NEXT DAY ABOUT GASTRIN-17 ============== Gastrin-17 is a digestive hormone produced by G cells located in the pyloric mucosa of the stomach, mainly in the gastric antrum (the lower part of the stomach). It is released into the bloodstream and acts on the stomach to stimulate the secretion of gastric juice, particularly hydrochloric acid, which helps break down food during digestion. More than 90% of the gastrin produced in the gastric antrum is Gastrin-17, while another form called Gastrin-37 is mainly produced in the duodenum. Gastrin-17 is released when food enters the stomach or when the pyloric antrum is mechanically stimulated and the local pH becomes more alkaline. This signal prompts the stomach to produce more gastric acid. As the stomach becomes more acidic again, gastrin secretion decreases, helping to regulate acid levels. Gastrin-17 is a polypeptide hormone consisting of 17 amino acids and exists in two forms (sulphated and non-sulphated), both with similar biological activity. After circulating in the blood, gastrin is mainly metabolised in the kidneys, which is why gastrin levels may sometimes be elevated in individuals with kidney impairment. Measuring Gastrin-17 in the blood helps assess stomach acid regulation and the health of the gastric lining, particularly the antral mucosa. SYMPTOMS OF HIGH GASTRIN LEVELS (Hypergastrinaemia) Elevated gastrin levels are often associated with reduced stomach acid or excessive gastrin production. Possible symptoms may include: - Persistent indigestion or bloating - Nausea or abdominal discomfort - Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms (fatigue, weakness) - Frequent stomach infections due to low acid - Recurrent peptic ulcers in rare cases (e.g., gastrinoma) SYMPTOMS OF LOW GASTRIN LEVELS (Hypogastrinaemia) Low gastrin levels may occur when stomach acid production is high or when the antral lining of the stomach is damaged. Possible symptoms may include: - Acid reflux or heartburn - Upper abdominal pain - Frequent indigestion after meals - Gastric irritation due to excess acid
