FT4 (Free Thyroxine)
Check your thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disorders
Service Description
Biomarker: fT4 Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10 fT4 test measures the levels of free thyroxine in the bloodstream. Thyroxine, also known as T4, is a thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The fT4 test specifically measures the unbound or free fraction of T4, which is the active form of the hormone. The fT4 test is important for thyroid function assessment . Elevated fT4 levels along with suppressed levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) can indicate an overactive thyroid, characterized by excess thyroid hormone production. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, tremors, increased sweating, and fatigue. Low fT4 levels along with elevated TSH can indicate an underactive thyroid, where the thyroid gland doesn't produce sufficient thyroid hormone. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, depression, and memory problems. It is important to note that these symptoms can be caused by various other conditions, and the presence of symptoms alone is not sufficient to diagnose a thyroid disorder. Proper diagnosis and interpretation of fT4 test results should be done by a healthcare professional who will consider the individual's medical history, symptoms, and other relevant factors.
