It is essential for proper growth and development, especially during pregnancy. Low folate levels, known as folate deficiency, could lead to abnormal red blood cell production, characterized by large, immature red blood cells; neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in the developing fetus; poor growth and development particularly in infants and children; and increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adults. High folate levels, resulting from excessive supplementation generally does not cause symptons but may interfere with certain medications' absorption.
