Low folate levels, known as folate deficiency, could lead to abnormal red blood cell production, characterized by large, immature red blood cells; neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in the developing fetus; poor growth and development particularly in infants and children; and increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adults. High folate levels, resulting from excessive supplementation generally does not cause symptons but may interfere with certain medications' absorption.
