Blood clots are a normal part of the body's healing process, but they can also be dangerous if they form in the wrong place or do not dissolve properly. The D-dimer test is used to help diagnose conditions that involve blood clots, such as: -- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): This is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. -- Pulmonary embolism (PE): This is a blood clot that travels to the lungs and blocks an artery. -- Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC): This is a disorder that causes the blood to clot too much. The symptoms of a blood clot can include: -- Pain, swelling, and redness in the affected area -- Shortness of breath -- Chest pain -- Coughing up blood -- Diarrhoea -- Bleeding gums
