Cortisol levels increase in response to stress and help the body cope with stressful situations. High Cortisol Level (Cushing's Syndrome): A chronically high cortisol level can be a sign of Cushing's syndrome, a condition where your body produces too much cortisol for an extended period. Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome can include: - Weight gain, especially in the upper body and face (moon face) - Thinning skin that bruises easily - Stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts - Muscle weakness - High blood pressure - Mood swings and irritability - Irregular menstrual periods (females) - Excess facial hair (females) Low Cortisol Level (Addison's Disease): A chronically low cortisol level can indicate Addison's disease, a condition where your adrenal glands don't produce enough cortisol. Symptoms of Addison's disease can include: - Fatigue and weakness - Weight loss and decreased appetite - Nausea and vomiting - Low blood pressure - Darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) - Muscle cramps and pain - Loss of body hair (especially in females) - Depression or irritability
