Broadening the Horizon of Digestive Health.
Service Description
Biomarker: CA-50 Sample: BLOOD Results: SAME DAY Phlebotomy Fee: £15 ABOUT THIS TEST Cancer Antigen 50 (CA 50) is a high-sensitivity tumour-associated marker primarily used to detect and monitor malignancies of the digestive system. It is a sialylated carbohydrate antigen (a glycolipid) found on the surface of many cancer cells, particularly those in the gastrointestinal tract. WHEN CA 50 MAY BE RAISED Elevated CA 50 levels may be seen in pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, and other gastrointestinal tumours. CA 50 can also be elevated in certain non-cancerous conditions, including inflammation of the pancreas, liver disease, and other digestive system disorders. SYMPTOMS THAT MAY REQUIRE FURTHER ASSESSMENT Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort. Unexplained weight loss. Loss of appetite. Changes in bowel habits. Persistent digestive problems or bloating. Fatigue or general weakness. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE While similar in function to the well-known CA 19-9, CA 50 offers distinct clinical advantages: 1. Gastrointestinal Precision: It is a potent marker for Pancreatic, Colorectal, and Gastric cancers. 2. Early Recurrence Tracking: Research indicates that a rise in CA 50 levels can precede clinical symptoms of cancer recurrence by months, making it an invaluable tool for post-operative monitoring. 3. Biliary Health: It is highly sensitive to conditions of the bile duct, including cholangiocarcinoma. IMPORTANT NOTE CA 50 is not a diagnostic test for cancer on its own. Elevated levels may occur in both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. Results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history, imaging, and other diagnostic investigations.
