Service Description

Biomarker: C4 Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10.00 The C4 test measures the levels of complement component 4 in the blood. Complement component 4 (C4) is a protein involved in the complement system, which is part of the body's immune defence against infections. C4 deficiency is a rare genetic disorder characterized by low levels or dysfunctional complement component C4 in the blood. The symptoms of C4 deficiency can vary, but they may include: -- Recurrent infections: C4 deficiency can lead to a weakened immune system, making individuals more susceptible to bacterial infections, particularly respiratory and skin infections. -- Autoimmune diseases: C4 deficiency is associated with an increased risk of developing autoimmune conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), immune complex glomerulonephritis, or vasculitis. -- Skin manifestations: Some individuals with C4 deficiency may experience skin symptoms, including rashes, hives (urticaria), or other skin manifestations related to immune dysregulation. -- Joint pain and swelling: Arthritis-like symptoms, such as joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, can occur in individuals with C4 deficiency. -- Kidney problems: C4 deficiency can contribute to the development of kidney diseases, including glomerulonephritis, which may lead to symptoms such as blood or protein in the urine, oedema, and high blood pressure. --Photosensitivity: Sensitivity to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, resulting in skin rashes or other symptoms upon exposure.
