Beta-2 Microglobulin (β2-MG)
Evaluate your kidney function to detect renal tubular disorders
Service Description
Biomarker: β2-MG Sample: BLOOD Results: 2 HRS Phlebotomy fee: £10.00 β2-MG is a small protein that is present on the surface of most cells in the body. It plays a role in the immune system and is involved in the formation of MHC (major histocompatibility complex) molecules, which are important for immune recognition and response. β2-MG test is a sensitive and specific diagnostic index of renal tubular damage and sensitive indicator of hypertensive and diabetic renal damage. Some disorders associated with β2-microglobulin abnormalities include: -- Multiple myeloma: β2-MG is used as a prognostic marker in multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells. Higher levels of β2-microglobulin in the blood may indicate disease progression or poorer prognosis. -- Lymphoproliferative disorders: Elevated β2-microglobulin levels can be observed in certain lymphoproliferative disorders, such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. -- Kidney transplantation: Monitoring β2-microglobulin levels can help assess graft function and identify potential complications after kidney transplantation.
